Afinando : Conjunto Imagen (Muziq Records)
Conjunto Imagen are one of New York's best loved and hardest working salsa bands today. Formed in 1989 by conguero Ernie Acevedo and tresero Junior Rivera, they play swinging salsa with that Cuban son edge reminiscent of the great Conjunto Classico. Pure dancefloor salsa for the the dancers, nothing too jazzy, nice arrangements with the conjunto "trumpet" sound augmented by booting baritone sax and cool flute from Angel Talavera. Both singers are great - Eddie Rosado and Johnny Ortiz - and the whole band swings like crazy.
For DJs, there's at least 6 or 7 tracks to play out. My favourites are "Que buena son las mujeres" featuring Eddie Rosado on vocals, and the fiery rumba "Tremendo Rumba" with Eddie Acevedo's congas really saying something.
They have the full spectrum of salsa locked down, from Cuban son to salsa dura, rumba and even salsa en ingles (though leave that one alone maybe) - something for everyone.
Alongside the killer new La Excelencia CD, this is my favourite new Big Apple salsa release so far for 2009.
