Salsa De La Mata (From The Roots) - Jesus Pagan y su Orquesta (EGJ)
From the first bar of track one on this CD, you KNOW its gonna be a heavy hitter! Swinging New York salsa dura that pays respect to the past masters - Jesus Pagan is even pictured on the front cover of the cd sitting listening to classic salsa VINYLS on a small portable record player! Love the stacks and stacks of vinyls behind him - just like my place!
The band swings but then again it would, being packed with New York's finest players - Lucho Cueto on piano, the great Eddie Montalvo on congas, Hector "Maximo" Rodriguez on bass, Richie Viruet on trumpets, and the young master on timbales, Luisito Quintero! Respect also to bongosero Jorge Gonzalez (that campana is on-point), trombonist Joe Fiedler, and hats off to baritone sax man Carl Corwin - the icing on the cake! Even Conjunto Classico's legendary singer Ray Castro is on corro duties!
Jesus Pagan is a fine vocalist and the material here is pure salsa for dancers - three and a half minute to four and a half minute tracks, great arrangements plus tempos are medium but with that little extra push that always makes the best salsa swing! Big track is the opener "Ritmo Sabroso" - doing the most damage on the dancefloors right now. "Tributo A La Salsa Ayer De Ayer" is another big one, and namechecks the salsa legends. However, from 8 tracks on this CD, I can't find one weak link, and DJs could play any and guarantee a full dancefloor.
After La Excelencia and Conjunto Imagen, yet another kicking New York salsa dura release - looks like 2009 is gonna be a good year for real salsa!
