Latin Motion have been organising these Boxing Night Specials on the 26th December every year for the past few years, which have been held at various venues on Broad Street, Birmingham.  This year’s event, like last year was held at Jongleurs Comedy Club, above Bar Risa, Broad Street, Birmingham B1 2HF.  It took place in the large club room, as opposed to their regular Thursday salsa nights which are held in the smaller club rooms.  Entrance to this event was £8 if booked in advance online.

This room is fantastic and perfect for larger scale events like this one.  It has a raised seating area, its own bar area and toilets, air-con, and most importantly a very large dancefloor and great sound system.

As we were staying in the Travel Lodge a few hundred yards up the road we thought it was silly to stay in our room waiting for the dancing to start, so we made our way down to Jongleurs and arrived just as the classes were starting.  The warm up was just finishing and there were already quite a lot of people there, most of whom were taking part.  We got ourselves a drink, found some seats and settled down to watch the classes.  There were 3 classes going on – Beginners with Mauricio, Improvers with Gary and the very large Intermediates class was being taken by Guest Teachers Marchant Birch and Davina.

The first thing we noticed about the room was the temperature – we were just sitting down chatting and already we were very hot, so the people doing the classes must have been sweating buckets.  Luckily though the organisers had also noticed the heat, and the air-con was soon switched on, just in time for the start of the dancing.

The floor in this room is great, and there is plenty of space even when it’s busy, so no injuries.  This room has a proper club feel which is also great and the atmosphere is always good here.  In a couple of places the floor was it bit too slippy though, but overall it was fine.

There was a good turn out and most of the regulars were there, together with more than a few out-of-towners which is always nice to see - everyone seemed like they were having fun.  I love this event and for me it’s great to look forward to after all the hassle and aggro of Christmas.  I’m very much in the ‘Bah-Humbug’ camp when it comes to Christmas, so this is my chance to kick up my heels and enjoy myself.

The music was good for much of the night, though there were a couple of periods when it wasn’t all to my taste, but you can’t please all the people all of the time.

Mid-way through the night there were two shows - one by the winners of the 2007 LatinFest Salsa Championships Jess and Dean, and the second was by Marchant Birch and Davina.  After the shows the music and dancing resumed, and the dancing went on until 2am, when we all left tired and happy.  Yay……… Christmas was over for another year!
