Wednesdays at The Wharf Cafe Bar in Walsall Print E-mail

I decided to go and check out Wednesdays at the Wharf in Walsall for a number of reasons: To drop some flyers for the next Salsa Central Party, to take DJ Mani out for the evening (he was working in Birmingham for the week), and lastly but most importantly to start attending regular lessons!

The venue itself is a spacious bar situated across the road from the Crown Wharf retail park near Walsall's town centre. The retail park serves as an ample overflow car park to the Wharf's rather moderate offering which fills up early as a result of the fantastic turnout every week at this night. The bar itself is spacious, with a high ceiling and good lighting. Wood floor is fitted throughout, and the sound system is more than adequate. As Salsa venue's go, this one is up there with the best of them.

We got there at about 8pm, halfway through the first hour of classes. Norman (Sizzla) was in the area across from the end of the bar teaching Beginners Level 2 / Improvers, while Don was teaching the Beginners lesson in the main part of the dancefloor in front of the DJ booth. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and having fun.

At 8.30pm, the next round of classes began, with Norman teaching advanced and Don taking the Improvers level class, which I took part in. This is the first time I've attended one of Don's classes, and was very impressed with the clarity of teaching as well as the class content, and can see why he's a regular fixture at various Salsa nights in the Midlands. The class participants were very friendly and I was made to feel welcome.

Once the classes were finished, Sizzla took over the decks. People who attend this night really are spoiled when it comes to the music they get to dance to after their classes, and I get the feeling that some of them might be a little disappointed when they go elsewhere.

The dancefloor remained full all the time we were there, and we left just after 10.30pm. The night itself finishes around 11.15pm. I'll definitely be attending lessons there on a weekly basis.

The night takes place every Wednesday at;
The Wharf Cafe Bar
10 Wolverhampton Street,
Walsall, WS2 8LR

Classes from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and 8.30pm to 9.30pm
