We filmed this interview at the first edition of the Salsa Kingdom festival in the UK, in 2008. Salsa Kingdom only ran for a couple of years but the first one had a big budget, with the likes of Eddie Palmieri & La Perfecta II, New Swing Sextet, Henry Knowles, Tito & Tamara and a whole host of international acts.

Eddie took some time out after rehearsal to speak with us;

We filmed this at Larrys apartment in November 2007 - we'd been in NYC for just over a week getting interviews for Salsa Central, buying music, hooking up with friends, and other activities.

We’d called Larry every day since we arrived, but he was busy with various commitments and I began to feel like this was one was slipping through our fingers. Persistance paid off, however, and Larry finally agreed for us to come over on the morning of the day we were due to leave New York.

It was an amazing experience and one of my highights of working on Salsa-Central, although it barely scratches the surface.
Larry is such a great guy and it was an honour to meet him!!

LARRY HARLOW BIOGRAPHY

Interview with Larry Harlow.
Larry Harlow is a true living legend of Afro-Cuban music. Born in Brooklyn, New York, his early influences were his father Buddy, who was a professional bass player and his mother Rose, who sang opera. A graduate of the prestigious N.Y. High School of Music and Art, he excelled on oboe, flute, violin, bass and the instrument that he is most noted for, the piano. Although jazz and the piano styling of Art Tatum were his first love, his growing exposure as a teenager to the music and culture of the New York Latino community fascinated him.

Salsa Central was originally launched way back in May 2007 as an online Salsa and Latin Music and Dance Magazine. We featured current news, CD and event reviews, video and written interviews, articles, an events calendar, directory, shop, and more, and regularly attended, worked at and supported numerous events across the world.

Highlights of our time running the website included;

Various trips to NYC to interview some prominent artists, including Larry Harlow at his apartment in Manhatten, Chino Nunez and George Delgado in the Bronx, La Excelencia, New Swing Sextet, and many more.

Thanksgiving at Jimmy Bosch's house.

Running our own annual weekender, selling out every time

Running our parties

Handling PR for a number of CD releases

Driving 4 hours to Boston for the congress, straight off our flight from the UK and falling asleep missing the first night.

Meeting Lou, who ran El Barrio records at the time

Going to the Pulpos Hot Bread album launch party and interviewing Pulpo, with a cameo from Oscar Hernandez

Plus lots more amazing memories....

We took a little time out to focus on our work in the Group Exercise industry and didn't have the capacity to keep Salsa Central running, but now we've relaunched on a much smaller and more manageable scale, where we'll be reporting our archive of amazing footage and interviews collected over the years.
