How, why and when did you get into salsa?

Wasn’t thru choice that much I know J

Returned from La Republica Dominicana in 2000 and after dancing 24/7 to Bachata, I felt like my legs and soul had been amputated.

So off in search of Bachata I went.  Found out that in the UK there was Salsa and only Salsa that offered the odd Bachata track in an evening.

So off to a Salsa club I went and spent the majority of the night sat on my ass waiting for that one Bachata track.  Well after several weeks of this I was bored rigid so decided I was gonna have to learn this Salsa stuff to fill the time whilst waiting for the Bachata.  And so I did!  And surprisingly I do sometimes enjoy it.

Who first taught you to dance salsa?

Iris de Brito and I consider myself to be very fortunate as I know that many other teachers would not have offered me the fun and freedom that Iris did.   Iris has a great attitude to dance and actively encourages you to ‘do your own thing’…. within Salsa boundaries of course J

Did you have any dance training prior to salsa?

Yes – but pieces of paper don’t always mean anything.  So I know about muscle groups but don’t mean mine ain't gonna ache at the end of a night and so on….

Tell me a little about your company. When, why and how was it set up?

Not a company just someone with a PASSION for Bachata (and most dance styles actually) and want to share it with anyone and everyone…. if they’re up for it J

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Sex!

Who do you admire?

Martin Luther King.

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

Elvis Martinez – Dile que te amo (an oldie but I lurve it).

What are your all time favourite tracks?

Bachata - Anthony Santos – Pegame tu vicio

Salsa - Polo Montanez – Un monton de estrellas

RnB – Blackstreet – No diggity

What are your favourite albums?

Zacarias Ferreira – El Triste

What was the last CD you bought?

Don’t buy single CDs always buy a batch.  Last batch was all Bachata and mostly compilations as they seem to satisfy my ever changing moods.

What music is in your car/cd player/tape player at the moment?

Eric Clapton

Who are your favourite artists?

Don’t have any favourites, coz apart from Zacarias Ferreira I don’t know any of them personally.  It’s da music me lurves.

If you were not a successful Promoter/Teacher/DJ, what would you be doing instead?  Or if you also have a full-time job, what do you do?

I’m a chemicals analyst…. oooeeeerrr now that’ll surprise some people!

Tell me something most people wouldn’t know about you?

I am actually a GROWN UP …. nah nah nah nah nah J

What’s your all time favourite salsa club/event that you have played/taught/danced?

Love sharing Bachata with everyone, so every teaching event is a favourite.

But my fav club for social dancing is Café Rez in Vauxhall (but not when it is at the Colesseum – sorry Phil).

And also if either Johnny G or Mauricio are DJing I know I’m guaranteed a great night coz the music will be banging.

What has been your most memorable moment?

I do have one in life, however it was very personal and no, I’m not prepared to share… so there!

Have you had any embarrassing/nightmare-ish moments in salsa?

Now let me think about this…. Erm, yes, probably, maybe, perhaps, definitely …. How the hell do I know I’m normally pissed!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Definitely not about me no, coz I already feel rather naked having shared all this.

However I would like to mention my Bachata night in Oldbury, Birmingham on 1st September.

Come along and try something different.  Some of you may dislike Bachata because it interrupts your Salsa night but hey it’s a whole different ball game having Salsa interrupt your Bachata night.

You may love it, hate it or tolerate it…. but you won’t know till you try.
