Well, GBSEx, what a blast!! It came and went with a real bang and the Guinness World Record Spinning Attempt was certainly the highlight of my weekend.
Just in case you didn’t know who/what the Guinness World Record Book is/are (if you don’t, where the heck have you been???) I thought I’d give you a bit of background.... ‘The Guinness World Records, known until 2000 as The Guinness Book of Records (and in previous U.S. editions as The Guinness Book of World Records), is a reference book. Published annually, the book contains an internationally recognized collection of world records, both human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record, as the best-selling copyrighted series of all-time.’
The aim of the spinning attempt was to judge who could achieve the most spins in one minute. The record is currently held by a Tango couple who achieved 113 spins in one minute (phew)! All of the attempts were timed and each couple had three attempts, there were certainly some green looking faces at the end of it all!
In accordance with the GWR rules, the attempt had to be documented so there were two designated people, one to video the attempt and one to take photographs. GWR also required two witnesses that were qualified in their field so Angus Peters and Simon Taylor, both UKA qualified instructors were roped in. Don’t know how that happened (just messing guys)!! All of the above basically meant that the GBSEx guys had a shed load of work to do!
Several dancers, amateurs and professionals alike, took part in the attempt. It was great to see so many of the top teachers and performers enter, including our international representatives, Victor and Burju from Hacha Y Machete! The attempts were very entertaining, particularly with Dean from Brighton giving the girls a run for their money with his spins!
The results were then presented on the Sunday night of the congress, with Lisa and Giles from Oxford coming out top with 125 spins - makes me feel sick just thinking about it!! All of the documentation has now been submitted to the GWR and we shall wait with baited breath to see if the Salsa Scene has stolen the crown away from the Tango Crew! I shall be at GBSEx again this year and from all of the salseros talk about who will be entering this year, I will certainly make sure I have a front row seat for this years attempt!!
