Rumberos, weekly Fridays at The Wardrobe, Leeds
Leeds new weekly Friday Salsa night, Rumberos, is held at The Wardrobe near Leeds city centre. The Wardrobe is a multi-roomed venue, with the Salsa events taking place in the club, a fantastic subterranean room with a fully-stocked bar and adequate seating.
Entering the venue, the dancefloor is to the right, and is a couple of feet below floor level, with a stage at the front. In addition to the dancefloor, the surrounding area are also moderately suitable for dancing, and overall this makes for quite a large dance area.
Music for the nights come courtesy of a heavyweight residents line-up in DJ Lubi (International Salsa DJ and CD Compiler), Fabio Bahia, and Silvao (with his ever-increasing armoury of Salsaton remixes). In addition, they also bring the occasional guest DJ. Music policy is across-the board Salsa, plus the odd Bachata, Merengue, Reggaeton, etc, keeping everyone from the 'dancers' to the latino crowd happy.
Regular guest teachers are booked, in addition to resident Nicky Lloyd Greame, and an effort is made to cover a variety of styles with weekly specials.
We were there as part of the Rumberos vs Salsa-Central night, during which Mel C took an intermediate shines and partnerwork class, while Emil took care of Beginners.
Both classes were busy, and the club had filled quite well by the time the party started. Lubi kicked things off, and we were then treated to Mel C and Emils show at around midnight. I was then guest DJ for a while before Lubi finished things off to a still busy dancefloor.
Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the Leeds Salsa scene, and one which could run and run given the right support. The venue is just right, with a real underground vibe!
Forthcoming events include Encuentro Latino on 12th June and La Excelencia, who will blow the roof off this place, on 3rd July!
