These events are run by my good buddies DJ Ricardo and DJ El Capitan. For some strange reason they call themselves Salsa Frog Promotions. Ricardo did explain the story behind the name, but it’s nor for public consumption!!!! They are normally held every Bank holiday Sunday at a venue in Nottingham. Every event will have guest teachers, Cross Body and Cuban style; so all general styles are catered for.
First up this venue is a full on proper nightclub, a rarity for salsa events!!! Full working air con, massive car park, fantastic dance floor and reasonable bar prices for a night club. The venue has will accommodate around 400 dancers. There must have been around 270 on my visit. However part of the club was partitioned off so it still appeared quite full. Gate rate is £10/£7 concessions, club until 2am
The sound system is spot on; it’s a djs paradise (I’ve played there a few times) The sound quality, power and driving bass will take your dancing to another level. When I arrived, Potty and Maxine were just finishing their class. These two are exceptional teachers and fantastic social dancers; check them out if you can.
DJ El Capitan opened the proceedings with a blend of Cuban, Columbian and Bachata. The dance floor was full from the off, the club lighting gave the event a nice intimate atmosphere. El Capitan continued banging out his stuff and………people kept dancing.
The guest DJ was Piotr Dudek from Poland. This guy is has a phenomenal knowledge of salsa and is a massive collector of vinyl Salsa Viejo(old salsa) Piotr hit the dexx slammin out a good mix of old and new skool salsa; the dancers were definitely feeling it. It’s a fantastic sight to see sweaty bodies dancing with big beaming smiles. It don’t get much better………well it does but that’s for another forum!!!!!
DJ Ricardo stepped up to the plate and kept the night swinging with a selection from his vinyl collection. Ricky’s found his mojo(private thing) The dance floor remained full till the end. There has been a definite shift in music policy on this visit, for what it’s worth it gets my thumbs up.
Richard(Ricardo) and Steve( El Capitan) imho have worked hard to put on a fantastic night. It’s chilled, friendly got a reasonable mix of dancers in terms of ability. There’s enough there for the Cuban heads, for the on liners and on 2 crew. I spotted a few from London, hope it was worth your trip. Managed a few dances in between interviews and chattin. Had a couple of dances with Piotr’s misses Ula, thanks for the honour.
Overall, top venue, great crowd, fantastic music. Shame upstairs wasn’t open; it’s a table dancing club!!!!!
