My goal for this year is to learn more rumba and afro-cuban body movement and footwork. That in mind I thought I’d check out Iris De Brito’s DVD “Body Talk II”, the second DVD in this Body Talk series as the title suggests.
Iris starts by breaking down posture for afrocuban movement and then takes you through shoulder, hip and arm movements in isolation for rumba/\Orishas/\afrocuban and incorporates these into the basic step.
Some lovely movements are broken down, and Iris and her dancers (Ella and Elisa) provide a short demonstration of some of these movements as an inspiration of what you are working towards! Only criticism is that Iris doesn’t provide an opportunity for you to practice these movements with some of the footwork that is demonstrated by the girls to music, which would have been good to consolidate the timing of the movements and footwork.
That said it’s a good introductory DVD to some of the basic movements fundamental to this kind of dance, with bite sized chunks to practice and immediately introduce into your dancing. I look forward to the next DVD in what I hope will be a series.
