Quiver - Cous Cous
Quiver is a UK based 6-piece Latin Jazz band, and Cous Cous, which was released in May, is their first CD.
All 10 tracks are original compositions, and have been inspired by the likes of Irakere, Sergio Mendes, Marcus Miller, Pat Metheny, Weather Report, Dave Valentine, Dave Sanchez, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Poncho Sanchez, and Richard Bona. The tracks are a fusion of Latin rhythms, with a funky Jazz base.
Latin Jazz isn’t what I normally listen to, so I’m no expert, but if you are a Latin Jazz aficionado, then maybe this CD is just what you’ve been looking for. Some of the tracks are smooth, laid back, jazz café style tunes, whilst others are lively and uplifting, with frenetic percussion sections.
This band certainly has no shortage of energy and exuberance! Their passion for what they do comes across clearly in each of the tracks.
I have been playing this CD all weekend, and it's like nothing I’ve ever listened to in the past, which is no bad thing – variety is the spice of life as they say. Personally I miss the addition of a vocalist, as I think the sound of the human voice adds an extra dimension to music, but that’s just my personal taste.
Although I’m not a Latin Jazz convert just yet, I found the CD easy to listen to, and I shall continue to listen to it some more.
Song samples are available to be downloaded from the Quiver website if you fancy checking out their tunes for yourself.
